Thinking About Laser Skin Treatments? Here’s What to Know Before You Book

Laser treatments can be an excellent way to target pigmentation, improve texture, and boost collagen. But great results depend on more than just the machine — they rely on preparation, timing, and personalised planning.

At Platinum Cosmetics, we offer a range of Fotona laser treatments tailored to your skin type, goals, and seasonal needs. Whether you’re new to laser or just considering your next session, this guide will help you prepare.

Before You Book — What to Consider

  1. Do you know your skin goals?

We always start with a consultation to clarify what you’re hoping to achieve. Are you looking to reduce pigmentation? Soften lines? Improve skin texture? These goals guide everything that follows.

  2. Have you had recent sun exposure?

We recommend avoiding direct sun and solariums for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Tanned or sunburnt skin can increase the risk of complications and may delay your session.

  3. Are you using active skincare ingredients?

Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and exfoliants can sensitise your skin before treatment. We may advise pausing them for several days beforehand — we’ll discuss this during your consultation.

  4. Are you prone to cold sores?

If you’re receiving treatment near the mouth or lower face and have a history of cold sores, let us know. We may recommend antiviral medication before your appointment.

  5. Are you planning other treatments soon?

Let us know if you have any upcoming facials, peels, or cosmetic skin treatments booked elsewhere. Certain combinations need to be timed carefully to avoid overstimulating the skin.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Every client receives a personalised consultation before starting laser. During this session, we’ll:

  • Review your medical and skin history

  • Assess your current skincare routine

  • Discuss which laser options may be most appropriate

  • Answer any questions about downtime, comfort, and treatment plans

We’ll never pressure you to proceed — we’re here to educate, not push.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Once you’re cleared for treatment, we’ll provide a prep guide that includes:

  • No active skincare for 3–5 days before treatment

  • No waxing or hair removal in the area

  • Avoid alcohol or anti-inflammatory medication the night before

  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin

Aftercare Is Just as Important

Post-laser skin needs hydration, protection and gentle care. We’ll recommend barrier-supportive products from our skin care range and advise you on:

  • When to resume exfoliation

  • How to manage any redness or dryness

  • What to avoid (sun, saunas, vigorous exercise)
