How to Layer Your Skincare Products (So They Actually Work)

Using great products is only half the story — the order you apply them in can make or break your results.

At Platinum Cosmetics, we often help clients fine-tune their routine not by adding more steps, but by adjusting when and how those steps are applied. The goal? Simplicity, consistency, and results.

Here’s how we recommend layering your skincare for maximum benefit — morning and night — without unnecessary confusion.

Why Product Order Matters

Each product in your routine is formulated to work on a specific layer of the skin. Applying a thick cream before a lightweight serum? You’ve just blocked absorption. Using an active too early or too late? You might trigger irritation or reduce its effectiveness.

The right order allows your products to absorb properly and work as intended — without overwhelming your skin.

Morning Skincare Routine (AM)

Your morning routine should focus on hydration, protection, and preparation for the day ahead.

1. Cleanser

A gentle, non-stripping cleanser is ideal. This removes overnight oil and product residue without compromising your barrier.

2. Toner or Mist (optional)

If you use one, keep it hydrating — no alcohol or astringents.

3. Serum

Apply active ingredients now — like vitamin C, niacinamide, or peptides. This is the most important treatment step in the morning.

4. Moisturiser

Use a cream suited to your skin type. For oily skin, a gel-cream may be enough. For dry skin, a richer texture helps lock in hydration.

5. SPF

Non-negotiable. Apply generously every single morning, even on cloudy days or if you work indoors. Your skin care investment depends on it.

Evening Skincare Routine (PM)

The evening routine is all about recovery and repair. This is when your skin regenerates, so treatment-focused steps are key.

1. Cleanser

Always cleanse to remove sunscreen, makeup, and environmental buildup.

2. Active Treatment

This is where you apply products like retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or prescription topicals (if prescribed). Apply to clean, dry skin and wait 5–10 minutes before moving to the next step to reduce irritation.

3. Serum or Essence

If you’re not using a strong active, this step can include hydrating or calming serums.

4. Moisturiser

Lock it all in. At night, don’t be afraid of a richer cream — especially if you’ve used actives.

5. Facial Oil (optional)

If your skin is dry or sensitive, an oil can be added last to seal in moisture. Not everyone needs this step.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using too many actives at once

  • Layering exfoliants and retinoids together (unless advised)

  • Skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily

  • Applying SPF before moisturiser (SPF should always go last in the morning)
