Q&A: Does Laser Skin Treatment Hurt?
If you’ve never had laser before, it’s natural to feel nervous about how it might feel.
A common question we hear at Platinum Cosmetics is: “Does laser hurt?”
The short answer is: some treatments feel warm or mildly uncomfortable — but not painful for most people.
Here’s a closer look at what to expect, and how we keep your experience as comfortable as possible.
Different Lasers, Different Sensations
We use Fotona laser technology, which allows us to adjust the wavelength, intensity, and technique depending on the treatment and skin type. This gives us control over:
- Heat delivery
- Depth of treatment
- Pulse duration (which can reduce discomfort)
For example:
- SmoothEye (around the eyes): Feels like a warm, tingling sensation — most clients describe it as very manageable
- LipLase: Slight heat and tightness during treatment, often compared to a warm flick
- Laser for pigmentation or rejuvenation: May feel like a series of warm snaps, followed by lingering heat for a few hours
What About Numbing Cream?
Most of our Fotona treatments don’t require numbing, because the laser parameters are optimised for comfort without sacrificing results.
However, for deeper resurfacing or more intensive sessions, we may apply a topical anaesthetic to ensure you’re completely at ease.
What You’ll Feel After Treatment
Post-laser sensations often include:
- Warmth or heat for a few hours
- Mild redness (like a light sunburn)
- Gentle tightening or dryness in the following days
We’ll provide clear post-care instructions and recommend barrier-supportive products from our skin care range to keep your skin calm and comfortable.
Tips for a More Comfortable Experience
- Avoid caffeine on the day of treatment — it can increase skin sensitivity
- Come in with clean, makeup-free skin
- Let us know if you’ve had any reactions to skincare or treatments before
- Follow your pre- and post-care instructions closely
Trust the Process — and Your Practitioner
At our Port Melbourne clinic, your comfort and safety are our priority. We’ll always:
- Talk you through each step of the treatment
- Check in regularly during your session
- Adjust your settings if needed

Our goal is not just great results — it’s making sure you feel informed and supported the entire time.
