How to Build a Low-Maintenance Skincare Routine That Actually Works

If your bathroom shelf is overflowing with half-used products — or if you’re tired of complicated routines that don’t seem to make a difference — you’re not alone.

At Platinum Cosmetics, many of our clients come to us feeling overwhelmed and overcommitted when it comes to skincare. The good news? You don’t need a 10-step routine to have healthy, glowing skin. You just need the right products, in the right order, used consistently.

Here’s how we help clients build simple, sustainable routines that deliver real results.

Step 1: Start With the Basics (Yes, Just 3 Steps)

Every effective routine should include:

1. Cleanser

Choose a gentle cleanser that removes oil, makeup, and sunscreen without stripping your skin. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers, especially if your skin feels tight or reactive afterward.

2. Moisturiser

Your moisturiser should soothe and support your skin barrier. Look for one with ceramides, squalane, or niacinamide — tailored to your skin type (lightweight for oily, richer for dry or sensitive).

3. SPF (AM only)

Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Even in winter. Even indoors. It’s the single best product for preventing premature ageing and pigmentation. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ or 50+ you’ll actually enjoy using.

Step 2: Add One Treatment Product (Only If Needed)

Once your basic routine is working well — and your skin is calm — you can consider adding one of the following, depending on your concern:

  • Vitamin C (AM) for brightening and antioxidant protection

  • Niacinamide (AM/PM) for barrier support and oil regulation

  • Retinol or gentle exfoliants (PM) for ageing, pigmentation, or congestion

But just one active at a time. Adding too much too soon often leads to irritation and confusion.

Step 3: Know When to Pause and Reassess

If your skin feels:

  • Irritated or stinging

  • Constantly breaking out

  • Dehydrated or overly oily

You may be doing too much.

We help clients pull back, simplify, and rebuild — often seeing better results with fewer steps and smarter sequencing.

Step 4: Align Your Routine With In-Clinic Treatments

Your at-home routine should support the professional treatments you’re receiving — whether it’s laser, needling, or facials.

We’ll help you:

  • Know what to pause pre- and post-treatment

  • Choose actives that complement, not compete

  • Adjust seasonally (especially heading into winter)
